I know it's been talked about for some time, but it looks like it's finally happened - the next series of DW is to be split into two halves in 2011 - for spring and fall transmission, plus a Christmas Special!

UPDATE: Moffat is referring to this now as not being a 'split', rather as Series 6 in the spring, and Series 7 in the fall, with Series 6 having 7 episodes and Series 7 having 6.

I'm feeling...mixed about it. I guess we'll see.

It's been talked about for a long time. I'm assuming the reason it wasn't done for the last series was so Matt Smith could get established in the role.

True. More like how it used to be broadcast...

five bucks, though, says that they'll charge the same for both halves of the DVDs, though. :/

Probably so, what with the potential loss of the license fee looming.

I'm not sure how thrilled I am with this idea. One part of me is grumbling that this is just more opportunity for Moffat to jerk the fans around. Another part is saying that I'm a nutjob :)

I guess I'll have to wait to see how this goes down but I'm remaining cautious.

It'll still be the same amount of DW, just more spread out. I suppose I'm more worried about the need for a mid-series cliffy. It'll be interesting to see what happens to the viewing figures with this transmission change. At least it's not a return to the half-hour serials format that was allso rumored, right?

I imagine there'll be a panel dedicated to this topic at Gally - see you there? ;)

That is intriguing news. I wonder why the format was changed.

They've been wanting to move DW to a fall transmission for years now. It'll be interesting to see if this split lasts one year or is ongoing.

I was not aware of that. I'm intrigued to see what happens now.

So they're finally up and doing it, eh?

We'll see if the British audience has the same patience with it as the American audiences do for SciFi cleaving all their shows in two for no apparent reason.

I wonder if this will be what was originally talked about, though - a grand plan to shift the whole show to a fall/winter airtime by doing one split year and then going fall/winter moving forward.

That would be one sneaky way of cutting the budget - if Christmas is just part of the regular series, then that's only 13 and not 14 episodes they have to do a year.

Yep, they are.

I dunno if it will be permanent or not - the way Moffat is talking it up, it sounds like there'll be a permanent split, but he could very well be just trying to sell it to the British public. And as far as I know, Christmas won't be treated as part of the regular series, but we'll have to see.

How ... odd.

What were the viewing ratings for Season 5 vs the RTD years? Did it slip somewhat?

I still remain guarded against Stephen Moffat and his take over of Who. Mainly because I haven't actually seen S5 yet (don't worry about spoilers I know what happens).

On a slightly unrelated note I had a conversation a while back (on a [livejournal.com profile] dwrewatch I think) about the dragged out process of finding out who River Song actually is. The person I was lj-ing with remarked on how SM keeps telling us how fantastic she is rather then actually showing us. I guess this means that with the two season split it's going to take even longer. And I don't think that's going to help her character since most people I know (and myself) are generally 'blah' about her.

Slipped a bit, but the iPlayer stats were stellar and unfortunately not included, so it's a bit difficult to compare.

Mmmmmm... dunno how that's going to work with the split. I love Alex Kingston, so I'm sort of glad she'll likely be in both series.
