Catching Up!

Late to the game on this one, but just in case you haven't seen them yet, here's the covers/synopses (courtesy of Outpost Gallifrey) for the latest round of DW BBC novels, due to be released in September:

The Taking of Chelsea 426 by David Llewellyn

The Chelsea Flower Show: Hardly the most exciting or dangerous event in the calendar, or so the Doctor thinks. But this is Chelsea 426, a city-sized future colony floating on the clouds of Saturn, and the flowers are much more than they seem.

As the Doctor investigates, he becomes more and more worried. Why is shopkeeper Mr Pemberton acting so strangely? And what is Professor Wilberforce’s terrible secret?

They are close to finding the answers when a familiar foe arrives, and the stakes suddenly get much higher. The Sontarans have plans of their own, and they’re not here to arrange flowers...

The Krillitane Storm by Christopher Cooper

When the TARDIS materialises in medieval Worcester, the Doctor finds the city seemingly deserted. He soon discovers its population are living in a state of terror, afraid to leave their homes after dark, for fear of meeting their doom at the hands of the legendary Devil’s Huntsman.

For months, people have been disappearing, and the Sheriff has imposed a strict curfew across the city, his militia maintaining control over the superstitious populace with a firm hand, closing the city to outsiders. Is it fear of attack from beyond the city walls that drives him or the threat closer to home? Or does the Sheriff have something to hide?

After a terrifying encounter with a deadly Krillitane, the Doctor realises the city has good reason to be scared.

I'm guessing these will be our last novels with Ten - I hope not, but I think they will be. *sniffs*

Next up: [livejournal.com profile] lucyd3, here's your link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1110263/Wheres-Tardis-need-David-Tennant-gets-mobbed-hundreds-fans.html

Eeeeek! Poor DT! I'm assuming you've seen the pics of fans blocking Georgia Moffet's getaway car from (I think) Friday night? And tonight is the last night of Hamlet, and it's looking like there will be no DVD. Part of me is clinging to hope that this is because they're taking the show on the road, but no word yet. I can't even begin to imagine the insanity that will occur outside the theater today/tonight.

And this is from some insanely bored browsings yesterday in designated 'safe' areas while waiting for some tests to come back: http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20090109/sc_livescience/womencansmellamansintentions

Someone must write a fic about this. Just not me! XD

And finally, it looks like the sprained left wrist will be requiring surgery. *headdesk* Unfortunately, my mother will be undergoing a bilateral knee replacement in February, and I'm already going to be flying home for that to help out/provide moral support and whatnot. Maybe I'll be able to get it fixed in March, if it'll wait that long.

As I recall, there is a quote from Tennant (at the stage door in Stratford) saying he didn't see the point to a DVD as that would invalidate the "theater experience."

So ... that may be where some of the finger-pointing is coming from.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Possibly, yes.

How are you doing? *hugs*

Was going to do an update last night, but ended up reading and falling asleep.

X-ray was negative for pneumonia, so that's cleared up. But ... asthmatic bronchitis still in full force, so he switched my antibiotic to yet another wide-spectrum and put me on a heavier dose of Prednesone (god, and I said I'd never take that stuff again -- urg, bet I get moon-face). I feel enough better today after two days of it (I think I started at 60 mg and am at 40 today) that I actually got up by 2pm (which ain't bad given I hadn't fallen asleep till 6am) and have been playing Warcraft this evening. :)

I guess I'm getting better since I feel like killing things, eh? Hah!

So sorry to hear about your wrist! What sort of operation are they looking at?

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Urg. You have roid rage! *grins* I'm glad you're feeling a bit better.

Cystectomy, most likely. I don't think it's tendon rupture, but I can't rule it out either. I managed to tweak the digitis indicis minimus in training, but that was an obvious deficit in the range of motion. I had a cystectomy of the right wrist in 2003 and again in 2004, so that's what it is, most likely. Just on the other side, this time.

Ouch. Wrist surgery is no fun. Had a de Quervainn's tenosynovitis a number of years back (brilliant surgeon; alas left the area and went down to a posh practice in NC) and was frustrated how long it took to get back strength in that hand/wrist. I hope you're able to do it sooner rather than later, but I do understand having to go take care of family.

Up-thread you mentioned something about GM being besieged at the stage door this week? Hadn't run across it (and Google News isn't helping me). Sounds like part of the fan crowds this week at the Novello, eh? Such a shame. And I'm sure he didn't stop to autograph tonight, but last night one can't imagine any of them really wanted to.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Right now, it just plain hurts. Sometimes it wakes me up, which sort of stinks. There's a fairly subtle mass there, which makes me think cyst. But, as you say, there's no way I can help out my mother with my arm splinted and in a sling, so... *shrugs* It'll wait.

She picked him up in her car after Friday night's performance. Didn't get out of the car - I'm sure it was terrifying.

Hadn't heard about this m'self, but I can hardly blame her. Besides, if the point was to try to get him out of there, her parking and getting out of the car would've made everything just take that much longer.

Aye yi yi.

Well, it means they're still together, which is rather nice.

Did you see the news he was picking up a flat/house in Glasgow? I have some thoughts. (Beyond the obvious.)

Saw it, with the accompanying explanation that he wanted to spend some more time with his dad and have a place to crash there. Makes me wonder how much his dad gets bugged.

Makes me wonder how much his dad gets bugged.

DT seems, from what we've seen in stuff like the diaries and WDYTYA, like a good son, and he genuinely wants to be able to spend more time with his dad.

Having said that, it's also a good place to get the hell out of dodge if/when London gets too bugnuts. He kinda had a built-in getaway in Cardiff up until now.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I totally agree, but it's his dad he wants to spend time with, not the paps. I'm guessing they know exactly where his dad lives, which is why I wonder how much he gets bugged.

Unless he's moved away from the home that was shown pretty clearly in WDYTYA, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

My sister had a cystectomy on her wrist years back; fortunately she's not had a recurrence, but she also avoided taking jobs similar to the one that caused the problem... which is one thing when you're switching from low-level clerical involving typing to retail managerial with no typing, but not really an option in medicine.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Mine's from overuse, pure and simple. I blame the years of gymnastics.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
As I recall, there is a quote from Tennant (at the stage door in Stratford) saying he didn't see the point to a DVD as that would invalidate the "theater experience."

I can see that being a very valid argument while the play was still running, which is when people originally started clamoring for a DVD to be rushed to market. And it is certainly not the same as seeing it live, but as a fundraising tool for the RSC alone it would be worth its weight in gold.

[identity profile] editrx.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's certainly my feeling, but some actors really don't like to see a filmed production done of something that was done by them live. Staging for a filmed version is very different than the live experience, and switching to it would require a whole different mindset. Plus, the audience doesn't get the energy feedback you get when it's live, so ... I can sort of see his point.

Yet, I hope it's not his objection that's holding weight. I'd rather blame Auntie Beeb. :)

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yet, I hope it's not his objection that's holding weight.

Well, the principal actor not wanting to do it would weight pretty heavily there.

Filmed is very, very different... however, having seen both of the plays in October I would have to say that I think the audience participation, such as it is, matters more for Love's Labour's Lost than Hamlet. H is mostly the audience sitting there mesmerized, whereas there's definitely quite a bit of wink-wink nudge-nudge fourth-wall stretching and breaking involved in LLL.
ext_24631: editrix with a martini (Default)

[identity profile] editrx.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the audience participation as much as when you work on stage (I was a professional dancer with the Washington Ballet [now the National] and an actress before I busted out my knee and then broke my back, long stories both) there is, for lack of a better term, an energy exchange with the audience that has little to do with breaking the fourth wall or getting audience participation/reaction. You get none of that when you act to a camera. It's like apples and ... beach balls. Completely different beast.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Having done a teensy amount of nonprofessional theatre myself (back when I was in school), I know what you and he mean. It's also like the difference between a band performing live and filming a music video.

My point was purely from a practical standpoint: this iteration of LLL would suffer more than the Hamlet would, methinks.

I suspect that what would be the most likely way to see Hamlet or LLL onscreen would be if one or both were brought to the United States and they were filmed straight up on stage by PBS for Great Performances.

I'm still holding out hope for this!

What they really should do is the theatrical simulcasts like the Metropolitan Opera has been doing, but I'm not holding my breath.
