Update

The missing scene from THANTH is DONE!!!! It's off to the ever helpful and shiny betas for sprucing up and for help in deciding the warnings to slap on as well as to decide how it should be posted/distributed, 'cause it is very, very wrong. Not as bad as it could have been, but still... it's just wrong.

I'm feeling terribly dirty right now. Maybe another shower would help.

Or random hideous torture for the sake of hideous torture fics. There's plenty of those to go around as well.

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...although I'm less disturbed by torture, if it's in a plot. I mean, it's not like it doesn't happen in Doctor Who (more in classic than new.) Heck, even Eight in one of the audios was making an offhanded comment about hating torturers with cold hands.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of something I sent to you... I'm glad you're not disturbed by that in a sense.

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw, that totally wasn't disturbing.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but I didn't tell you what Rose was up to! *grins shiftily*

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I have too many kinky friends, because that wasn't overly disturbing. :)

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I hate it when I can't remember who I've told what to. *is getting old* Because overall, it is disturbing, somewhat.

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Naw. I've got really kinky friends, and I've lived in Seattle for 9 years. I don't think there's anything that surprises me anymore.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Maybe I should move. Then again... rain. Hrm. I'd have very curly hair, though.

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think of my friends, I'm the token straight, monogamous, vanilla person. Rain's not bad. It's sunny and warm from late June until October.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
What's really sad is that I write a little more productively if it's raining. We get > 300 days of sun here.

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean...I'm not a fan of the extended daylight hours in the summer (it's light at 4-5, and dark at 10 p.m.) When it's dark, I'm much happier.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I'm talking about some of the stuff on Teaspoon where that is the plot. That's it.

Example of a good fic which deals with the Doctor having been tortured: The Gift of Words by [livejournal.com profile] nogbad, because there's a point to it.

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, is that the one, where the Doctor loses all of his senses? That one was interesting. (and well-balanced by some good comfort at the end of it.) And, yeah, torture without a plot is annoying.

Nope. It's a long-term WIP (as in there are months between very long chapters) that hasn't finished yet. The first three parts are at T&C, the rest are at the author's journal. Here's the first part.

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, thanks...on part 4, and I like how she doesn't give you everything all at once...

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*shuffles feet nervously for another fic*

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd call the particular fics (or, to be honest, author) to which/whom I'm specifically referring, but then you'd have to actually go look at the fics in question.

There's a plethora of circumstances under which it would be appropriate to a plot for the Doctor to be tortured, even to the point of breaking: it would serve as a linchpin for hurt/comfort fics, to be sure. I think the only reason we don't see it more often is because of the continued perception by a lot of folks that it is, to a certain degree, a children's show.

When the entirety of a fic reads like a borderline snuff film, and it's clear the author must be taking a sadistic glee in writing the graphic torture scenes because that's all there is to the 'story'... that's just not on.

Was talking about an upcoming one of mine that I'm still plotting out, actually. There will be torture involved, but it is part of the plot.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've thought about/considered a fic or two with that as a big chunk of the plot m'self, but can't seem to bring myself to write 'em.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* I've found hurting the mains to be a very difficult thing, even if you know what you're talking about. There will be torture within the fic in question, but with a twist. Not looking forward to writing that particular bit, as I think it will be very nerve-racking.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)

There can be some ways to get around that, if the point is just to cause pain rather than injury (e.g., envenomization with irukandji sting), assuming literal injury isn't part of the plot.

Mmmmm... doubt they have any of that on the ice planet! *grins* And yes, the point is to cause pain and distress, not nec. permanent injury - which does make a huge difference in the writing.

You could borrow the effects of something like that, though, and just make up some alien creature from which the substance has been derived. A time honored trick of scifi writers. Not to mention the Doctor could try to be all rational and yak at Rose about how fascinating the stuff is, and how similar it is to X, Y or Z from Earth ('...galaxies away, but they evolved the same tactic for dealing with similar prey...').

I'm just trying to think of ways to make it less squick-inducing for you as a writer.

I'm ok with that stuff, it's the twist that's going to make things really angsty and potentially horrific. *squirms*
