Filming location for the first of the DW Specials....

Drum roll please....

DUBAI?!? Well, at least it'll be warm!

Source here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/garethmcleanblog/2009/jan/16/1

My original guess was Tunisia, just for the record.

And also - about midway though the article: (See also the plans to film another of the specials in America.)
OH PLEASE!!!

I had heard that a hot climate and beachscape of some sort were needed, and I hoped that Florida or California would be the destination. This location is shocking indeed, for many reasons including those well-argued in the article you post.

As DT really should not be doing any extended flights at this point in his recovery from back surgery, I figured they'd be staying fairly close to the UK. Which would be why I guessed Tunisia - they're a friendlier country overall, and have a good set-up for film crews. I'm still scratching my head over this choice, as is the writer of the source article, obviously!

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Any chance it's not true?

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The blogger sounds very convincing to me, at least - and filming is due to start on Monday....

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The article articulates a lot of the problems I've got with Dubai. I'm kinda disappointed in the Beeb. :/

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Bleh yeah. Feeling conflicted, now, and guilty for wanting to see it. :/

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Just did some checking - it's apparently much cheaper to film in Dubai than Tunisia, which may be the reason for the choice. Still... on moral grounds? Not excited.

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Me neither. :( I'm surprised for a show with such a strong message on social justice that they'd film there. Why, yes, I am Catholic. How can you tell?

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno... I suppose we'll have to wait for the confidential to see if they give the reasons for the choice.

And I'm not Catholic - and still unhappy. *grins wryly*

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll probably watch it and feel guilty as hell.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The hubby keeps teasing me that it'll probably be our next international trip, just because he knows it winds me up. :\

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess of the countries in the area, it could be worse. (Saudi Arabia comes to mind.)

[identity profile] elrina753.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Dubai... that's... interesting.

Hopefully they won't be filming there in the summer. Also, they'd better give them a run down of what drugs you can and can't bring into that country. Even poppy seeds will land you in jail.

Personally, I'd rather go to Tunisia. That would have made the Star Wars geek in me neurotic with happiness. :)

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they'll be filming there this month. Possibly starting on Monday. And yeah, if RTD is going along on this one, he'd better be damned careful.

And no kidding! Why not Tunisia? Why?!? *geeks out with you*

[identity profile] tenmartha4ever.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Just bumping into this conversation - sorry!

The Who crew will be in Swansea on Monday, so they won't be going abroad for at least a few weeks, I think. Also, in regards to DT... if his medical doctors say he can't go on a plane then he won't - there's a chance he might drive there (very unlikely) but it is possible, I guess.

I really hope it isn't Dubai - if so, a very poor choice.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that he can't do a long flight, it just won't be the most comfortable thing. Driving for that length of time would be worse.

And yeah, Dubai. *shakes head*

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh. Dubai? There are some great futuristic buildings there, along with some primo beaches (including one with air-conditioned sand!). They could make with the pretty very easily there.

Which I suppose is the point, but it's not as though they couldn't film elsewhere... say, one of the beaches on the Mediterranean, and then have the Mill whip something up like they did for TCI.

I'm not convinced they'd be able to get DT there safely: maybe this is another one of those things like the reccy in NYC, where it's just a bit of crew going and no actors?

And indoor skiing! *laughs*

From what I hear, they're having some major issues already in Dubai. I won't spoil you if you haven't been already, but RTD is currently doing frantic re-writes.

Welcome back, btw - did you have a nice trip?

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Dish on filming? That hardly constitutes spoilers.

Trip was nice save the complete lack of a decent night's sleep due to some crapulous beds. I'm hoping being back in my bed will get the shoulder/back spasms to knock off.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll still try to be careful - A major item was damaged in shipping, and it was initially thought that repairs could be effected, but that was before they saw the damage. Said item had a 30' container dropped on it, and it's pretty well smashed. I'm not sure if item can be fixed/replaced, but reportedly RTD is in the midst of some major re-writes because of this incident.

And oooh, that's unfortunate. I'd advise some gentle stretches (including the hamstring area) and maybe a heating pad? Hopefully the spasms settle down soon.

Somebody BROKE THE TARDIS?

Sorry, totally leaping to conclusions there, but WTF?

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Somebody BROKE THE TARDIS?

Ha! It's a little known fact that IKEA!TARDIS is indestructible! *grins*

But seriously, yeah - that's a major WTF! for the persons responsible for the shipping.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't tell me someone dropped a shipping container on the bus from the publicity stills.

[identity profile] mtemplar-fic.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, I won't. *grins*
