My best friend is Japanese - when we were in grad school together it'd always be quite the interesting experience whenever we went to her parents' house. Cleanliness seems to be a huge cultural thing for the most part (not that I mind), and all of the cleaning/soaking would go along with that.
I'm suddenly craving a bento-style lunch now! *grins*
