From THR:

Fox readying U.S. version of 'Torchwood'

Exclusive: Huge news for sci-fi fans: Fox is developing a stateside version of the U.K. hit series “Torchwood.”

The project is from BBC Worldwide Prods., with original series creator Russell Davies writing the script.

A more straight-faced spinoff of “Doctor Who,” “Torchwood” is about a covert group that investigates and fights alien activity. Two series aired domestically on BBC America as well as last year’s well reviewed stand-alone miniseries, “Children of Earth,” which broke all ratings records for the network. (If you're a fan of serious sci fi such as "Battlestar Galatica" and haven't seen "Children of Earth," rent it. You don't need to know anything about the series. And I know the previews for "Torchwood" can look silly. Trust me, it's terrific. Like "24" with aliens).

Unlike U.S. adaptations that have gone awry, “Torchwood” fans can take comfort that the original producing team is on board. In addition to Davies, exec producers include Davies’ producing partner Julie Gardner (former head of drama at BBC Wales for the show’s first season) and Jane Tranter (another BBC vet, now exec VP programming and production at BBC Worldwide Prods. in the U.S.).

Also, some of the current cast — most likely John Barrowman, who plays the immortal Capt. Jack Harkness — might star if Fox orders “Torchwood” to pilot.

As for the new show’s plot, the U.S. version will contain a global story line compared to the more localized sensibility of the first two BBC seasons.

Tranter might try to reboot “Doctor Who” for U.S. audiences while departing “Doctor Who” star David Tennant stars in NBC’s pilot “Rex Is Not Your Lawyer.” “Torchwood” (which is an anagram of “Doctor Who”) debuted in 2006 on BBC 3 and set ratings records, then was moved to BBC 1. Russell also reinvented “Doctor Who” in 2003 and was writer-creator of the series “Queer as Folk.”

I don't find this as bad of an idea as I generally find US remakes of British shows to be. At least RTD is behind it...

What boggles my mind is the last paragraph. Who in their right mind thinks rebooting Doctor Who for US audiences would even remotely work?

*nods* The only thing that worries me is the network. At least it's FOX, but still....

YES! As much as I might like the idea of having more of RTD's DW, this worries me greatly.

I wanted more of RTD's DW on the BBC. I just don't see how it's even possible to reboot the show for an American audience... it's just so British (and amazing the way it is. Hands off people!). I'm hoping the Beeb squashes that idea.

If it were BBCA, the beeb would b e able to squash it quite easily. But this is FOX, and would be in direct competition with BBCA. WTH.

This likely goes back to the reason Who was on SciFi for so long: the BBC's regs require that when it's shopping shows overseas, that they be sold to the highest bidder even if the BBC has an outlet in that country.

I just find it odd that a BBC Worldwide team has a show in the works for FOX. I suppose they're somewhat independant, but still....

Fox has 100% (or so close as to makes no difference) market penetration. BBC America not only is on cable, it's not even basic cable.

What I wonder if Fox would let them do is shoot it overlength and edit it down for commercials, and then what's on the DVDs and what BBCA gets is the full-length version?

You're kidding, right?

Fox let Firefly go to DVD with episodes they didn't even bother to air. And there are other shows that go to DVD with additional material in every episode that wasn't in the aired version.

I dunno...if it's another field office, it could possibly work (see Dollhouse and Firefly), at least for 2 seasons.

If they get their hands on Doctor Who? Like I said to [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1, hasn't Jesus suffered enough?

If this ends up happening, I suppose the big question is will it star John Barrowman, or will we be looking at a new cast?

A new cast would be interesting...

And could be done quite easily, given the format.

*shakes head*

Well, you've seen my post on the subject.

As far as US Who goes, I stand by my opinion that the only way to do it and not dilute or confuse the brand is to either use Paul McGann as Eight, or Christopher Eccleston as pre-Rose Nine or between-getting-rejected-and-coming-back Nine.

Otherwise their only sensible alternative would be to set up something weird, and dare I say it, timey-wimey to create a split-off version of the Doctor.

Don't forget about Ten II - that's another possibility.

Except you'd have to have both David Tennant and Billie Piper for that to be viable, and it would make Moffat look terrible.

Which is why it won't happen, but it's still a possibility.

It *could* be done, but I imagine it will go down just as well as the time they tried to Americanize Dr Who. Plus they’ll have to strip all the male gay but not the female gay to match Fox’s double standard. Sigh.

XD;;; or add more female gay to counteract the male gay?
