From a lovely little blog I found:

I got to see the costume shop, armory, and millenry (hats) departments yesterday too. They had all the Love's Labours costumes hanging about and they are STUNNING. There are lots of antique fabrics, beadwork, and incredibly intricate layering. I saw David Tennett's doublet up close and it is really incredible. It's all handstiched blue suede, with slashing all over it and a grey-blue silk peeping through, another layer of lining, and then the inner lining of the jacket. So gorgeous. One of the dresses for the girls nearly made me faint. It's an incredible dark sapphire blue with orange/red themed flower embroidery in a large print all over. So so so pretty. Ugh. I wish I could wear it! Armory was neat. They've got some suits of real leather armor with intricate stamping and embossing all over. They also do the boots and shoes there. So cool.

Oh wow...would be cool if they tour with either.

Not that a tour wouldn't be great, but I'm hoping for a DVD. I've read that a DVD for Hamlet is pretty much a done deal, but I haven't heard anything about this one.

I really wish we had something like the RSC...

Well, you can donate to RSC America, which does occasionally bring productions over here - although they'd usually be to New York, or very rarely DC (at the Folger Theatre).

What's really scary is that the current all-male production of Romeo and Juliet here in DC (authentically all-male, not drag per se) is that they seem to have purchased the leather doublet DT used during his run at the RSC.

That *is* sort of scary. I was under the impression that their costumes were custom.

Well, they are, but I believe if they're like any theatre company, they do occasionally sell them off. I know the Shakespeare Theatre here (et al.) certainly do. They just don't have infinite storage space.

I know for a fact that the costumes for Arena Stage are rented out sometimes, as well as sold to other companies. I used to sew for them when I was at NCS in DC back in the 70s -- the girls there (at least, back then -- I don't know if they still do it) were interned to learn prop and costume creation. I learned all my sewing from those days -- the costumes had to be perfectly made with hand-sewn details, as Arena has the audience quite close to the stage area.

You are one of many talents! *is impressed*

I'm just mildly surprised that anyone else would fit into a leather doublet custom-made to fit DT.

Naw, I just had a really strange youth in DC (NCS is the National Cathedral School for Girls -- at the National Cathedral ... British method, and incredible education, plus: cathedral right there!).

I've done a bunch: pro ballet (till my right knee had its third and final surgery), theater (same time as the ballet career, same end), film casting (worked for Joy Todd on 5 films, decided Hollywood production was not for me), time in college & grad school, then went on to publishing -- which is theatrical enough in the science fiction industry to suit me most days. But I miss the stage so much, and I wonder now if I would have been able to adapt to film production without losing much of my soul. Much. But it's too late now at 48, so I try not to pine too much. Been doing a lot of that lately as freelance editing is drying up across the industry.

That's quite the resume - publishing, eh? And you're reading my drivel? *laughs* I have a daughter who wants to be a ballerina and your mention of multiple surgeries makes me nervous. *crosses fingers that your knee is still somewhat functional*

Here's hoping things pick up for you soon!
