From the Evening Standard:

THE filming of David Tennant's last episodes as Doctor Who is under threat because to the star's debilitating back injury.

Tennant, 37, is struggling to recuperate from major surgery on his back after he suffered a prolapsed disc last month.

The injury has already come as a major blow to thousands of his fans who are now unlikely to see him in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Hamlet at London's Novello Theatre.

There are now fears that the star will still be out of action when the shooting of four special episodes begins in Cardiff next month, threatening to delay the project.

They are to be his last episodes before he quits the BBC's popular show at the end of next year.

Producers are frantically drawing up contingency plans to adapt around Tennant's prolonged recovery period, which according to spinal experts could take to "up to three months".

Yesterday, Tennant emerged for the first time since the operation, gingerly walking outside his home in Crouch End, north London.

Nevertheless he has been deemed not fit enough to attend a preview screening of the latest Doctor Who special which airs on Christmas Day.

I've been wondering for a while now how on Earth he would manage not only returning to the grueling filming schedule that DW entails, much less Hamlet, before being at least 6 - 8 weeks post-op. Here's hoping that he does get some more time to recover. If there's no DW on Easter, I'm OK with that - rather than possibly jeopardize DT's future career by pushing him back to work.

ETA: Per various sources, RTD is hopeful DT will be fit to start filming on the 19th of January.

I'm perfectly okay with them pushing things back a bit. Better for him to get well then to push himself.

*nods* Absolutely. If we have to wait, then we'll wait. I see no reason why the BBC would necessarily have to have a special on Easter. It's not like they're going to have a show about the holiday itself as they do for Christmas, right?

Unless RTD was silly enough to write a script that is specifically set at Easter - for which I personally can't think of a good reason - I can't see why they couldn't push out production by a few weeks.

From what I've heard about the specials, that'd be a no - not involving the holiday itself.

RTD may be irreligious, but he's not looking to get in trouble.

I just feel bad for DT, surgery on his back.. the first time he goes out they're waiting to take his picture, he couldn't finish his play and now there's all this DW talk (and my god I'll be happy when they just decide who 11 is going to be so we can just GET IT OVER WITH)

He should come hide out with me. I promise to take good care of him :)

Yeah, it's one thing to have surgery and be recovering, it's quite another to have people waiting outside your house to take your picture in addition. *grumbles* Leave the poor guy alone already!

And wouldn't you just! *grins*

I'm sure he'd be tempted to go hide out somewhere he'd be less immediately recognizable, except he probably can't really travel as-is either.

No - after that type of surgery, he'd be barred from driving himself anywhere for a few weeks. Being driven somewhere is a different story, but it wouldn't be comfortable, or advised just yet.

There's no adequate reason they couldn't just bump the Easter Special to the late May bank holiday weekend (Sat 23 May); if he recovers especially quickly they might make the early May bank holiday weekend (Sat 2 May). The Saturday before Easter is 11 April.

Some of his enforced break period is what was going to be his break between Hamlet and Who; they weren't going to start filming until late January anyway. Late January is 6 weeks postop, although I'd hope he'd give himself more than the bare minimum. Even shooting for the early May hol would give him 9 weeks instead of 6.

Three months out from 11 Dec is 11 February... so that's like, what, a three-week delay? There's always prep work they're trying to do concurrently with filming which could've been done in advance if they'd had the time.

The production team *should* have enough of a break between the filming of the specials and Series 5 filming to manage some extra time for DT, right? Theoretically, they'd have around 2 - 3 months to play with, as they wouldn't be filming a Christmas special with Series 5.

Well, given that a lot of the production team isn't even the same people who are doing the Specials, that's even less reason they couldn't accommodate David's surgical recovery.

Right. Although they would be using the same cameras/equipment and what not.

I can't imagine it would be particularly different from when they do the double-banked episodes during a regular season (one normal opposite the Doctor-light ep).

Probably not, but I suppose it depends on contracts, what they have booked already, etc.

No, I'm sure we won't. He's not that bad off, and if he's already out of hospital and able to leave the house it's likely he didn't have one of the higher-octane back surgeries like an artificial disc replacement.

Hard to say, but I guess that you're correct in that he's only had a microdiscectomy done. Leaving the house for a walk would be advised regardless of the procedure performed.

I don't think so. If they (TPTB) have any sense in their heads, they'll be very careful with DT. As in more accomodating to him in the shooting schedule/stuffs called for in the scripts/using his double more.

*nods in agreement*

I'm hoping he'll get as much time as possible.
