My stomach was already twisting during the Top Christmas Moments post-Confidential featurette when the caption beneath David Tennant said Tenth Doctor instead of just The Doctor. I had a feeling maybe the announcement was imminent at that point.

I saw that too, and was thinking along the lines of 'don't let the door hit you on the way out'. Sheesh.

I'm thinking about delaying the next chapter of Seuls by another week as I think the wank is going to be insane.

Oh! No, not at all. I saw that bit of news this morning, and all thoughts of finishing the chapter I was working on went right out the window. I was going to make an attempt to get TWO (yeah, I know!) chapters out this weekend, and I think if I get one done, it will be a miracle.

I honestly think the wank on this will be huge, and no one will be wanting to read, much less beta!

I think the level of wank will be entirely dependent on how much of the special features the actor getting to speak for himself versus how much of it features Moffat's usual self-promotional yapping and swipes at other people's work.

Absolutely. Dollars to dimes what we get is Moffat's own self-promotional crap and dissing RTD's work and probably DT's work as well. I am so dismal about what's going to happen from now on, as they're clearly pushing DT out the door before he's even done with the 2009 "specials," as if he's already gone -- they, meaning Moffat and his team.

I'm also wondering who they're going to get to do the music, since Murray Gold is leaving too. It's as if everyone's fleeing the Moffatdom to come.

You know, normally I'm a very optimistic person. I hate what this is bringing out in me.

I wonder if they're announcing it now, if Tennant isn't OK to resume shooting, a kind of CYA measure.

Now you're all paranoid! That really was not the intention of this post! I have Six back from you, no Seven. I have had issues recently with the lovely email (ie your post here is timestamped as coming in at 3:45 AM on my email - sheesh), so if you don't have Seven, lemme know and I'll send it.

DT *should* be cleared for work once he's six weeks out, but there'd be restrictions on what he can and cannot do - I imagine there making the announcement now to avoid a leak, as this particular confidential just sort of 'popped up' in the schedule.

Nope, no seven so far. Did you get my seven? No hurries on it. :)

As I remarked over to [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1, I wonder if this is how they felt during Logopolis. Growing up, PBS always had Doctor Who on years after it first aired, so it was no surprise who was replacing one actor.

I think by the time I'd seen Logopolis, I'd watched so many Doctors it wasn't really a surprise. I do remember being disappointed when my affiliate lost its license right as they started showing the Sylvester McCoy episodes.

Wow, I don't remember. It's like I grew up with the concept, so it really didn't freak me out when it happened. First episode I ever saw was "Seeds of Doom," and like [livejournal.com profile] playtpus said, the PBS affiliate used to skip around a lot. For instance I remember seeing "Deadly assassin" then "Invasion of Time," skipping over a lot of the Leela episodes. (Ironically two of my favorite episodes. When we finally got a VHS, I wore those tapes out.)

Yeah, I guess I must've started watching during Davison's tenure, in the early 80s on PBS, and I saw a random assortment of different Doctors. Either we didn't watch every single week, or they didn't show episodes in order very much, because there was a good bit of flipping back and forth. I knew many people had played the character over the years, and I didn't know who was current in England or even whether the show was still being made. When a McCoy episode popped up around 89ish, I was shocked that the show was still on (well, maybe it wasn't by then, but I didn't know) and sort of appalled at how much it had changed. I didn't start watching New Who until it showed up on SciFi -- I was well out of the loop at that point, having totally given up on the possibility of a new series after the TVM -- so by the time I knew it was really happening Tennant had already been cast. This is the first time there's any suspense to it for me.

We only had Tom Baker in the early 80s - I think I had some idea that there were different Doctors, but I was very shocked to see the T. Baker to Davison regeneration. Then 'The Five Doctors' was broadcast ahead of getting the Davison package (thank you NETV) in 1983, and I was ok with it by then.

I remember by the time I'd heard about NuWho coming back, we already knew that DT had been cast as Ten, so yeah - first time suspense here as well.

I was in college during the TVM, so I missed it until 2006, when I...found...it.

Come to think of it, my PBS affiliate used to skip around, too. I don't ever remember seeing "Planet of the Spiders," for instance.

Awww, Planet of the Spiders was scary when I was a kid.

I was in college during the TVM too, but I was in one of my phases of being interested in the show; I had some NAs and was a fairly regular reader of rec.arts.doctor-who on Usenet. I got to see all the fandom flailing because THE DOCTOR KISSED SOMEONE. Good times ;). Alas, I fell away for a while thereafter, and did not for a moment believe the rumors that the show would be resurrected in 2005. *cough*

May I say selfishly that it would be nice to get a chapter to ease the hurt of the wank we'll be enduring from the Big Announcement? :) (You knew I'd say that, didn't you?)

This whole 11th Doctor announcement was quite a shock for me to hear when I got home from the doctor (MD) today -- [livejournal.com profile] baron_elric and I got whatever's hitting the Northeast US, which appears to be bacterial not viral, but it's a doozy. I sound like Marlene Deitrich but even deeper -- I had to tell someone I called earlier today that I wasn't a dirty phone call! :) Anyway, what a surprise! It looks like they suddenly substituted what they're now calling "The Eleventh Doctor" Confidential for "The Ten Doctors" Confidential -- makes me think there is a slow or tiny leak they're rushing to plug. Or Moffat's pulling one of his typical dominance manipulations and making his move to make the show "his, all his" before the 2009 season officially starts. Which really does follow his pattern.

(Aside: Did you note that in the various announcements about/from Moffat in the last month, it's noted that he's writing an "entire new bible for the series"? That's highly unusual for an established series, changing the bible. I mean, he needs to write one for the particulars of the 11th Doctor for the upcoming scriptwriters, but the bible for the series itself should have been carried through. Rewriting it completely is bizarre. And oh, so Moffat. Bodes ill.)

Heh. We'll see how good my powers of concentration are tomorrow after The Big Announcement. I'm already making stupid typos all over the place.

And oh noes - you are not feeling well either? We had flu going around, now the usual upper respiratory stuffs. I'm still nursing the Cough of Doom, and baby has a fever today. D'oh!

Well, there's the whole canon that RTD wrote; for instance, the Time War, the end of the Time Lords and assorted other races and planets that were affected by whatever was done to obliterate them from all time and space; stuff like that. Which, if Moffat fools with ... gah. Means no more Lonely Angsty Doctor, means no more I Killed Everyone Doctor, means no more Doctor as we had for 9 and 10 -- because there was continuity there even though we clearly had different bibles for 9 and 10 themselves as personalities. Imagine throwing all that out. ::barfing noises::

(Added:) Yeah, it's the bronchial infection that's going around, which means coughing until 8am (well, I did get some sleep between 8 and noon, so all was not lost), snorfling like that British boyfriend I had in college who had adenoid problems (yeeechhh), ears so clogged they actually went all OOOOWWWWW! when I drove down the hill from my house to the lake (which is like all of a 50-ft drop in altitude!), and of course the I Can't Breathe If I Walk Across the Room problem, for which I luckily have an inhaler anyway (asthma, but usually only during the summer). I gots myself good drugs (inclulding a Medrol pack, which I dread but given the inflammations going on, I agree with my dr is a damn good idea this week), and with a hot bath (Oooooo -- I have this luscious bath gel I got for Christmas from a certain LJ person...! :) ) and lots of steam, I actually don't feel too badly. But I sound like a dirty phone call still. Heh.

Granted, RTD has fooled with his own canon to bring the Daleks back a few too many times, but on the whole? I like his canon. I like having lonely, loss-ridden Doctor as one of the central themes of the show. *sighs* I really do not want to see lonely, angsty Doctor pining away after the woman of his lives (for that week, e.g. MdP, RS) dies at the end of the episode. DO NOT WANT!!!!

Oh dear. Do you have a humidifier? Either that or a warm, steamy shower or a boiling pan of hot water on the stove? That would help your breathing as well. I'm not a huge believer in cough medications - one of the best one around, really is keeping things wet with water. Otherwise codeine, but that's another thing entirely. *grins*

Isn't the bath gel lovely? If it came in oil form, it would be perfect. Scratch and sniff THANTH! *laughs*

Yeah, having the lonely, angsty Doctor suddenly turn into something that is the polar opposite (or, worse, just plain wrong for the character) of Nine and Ten would be horrible. But ... we shall see.

(And ::whispers:: I do have news about NG. I'll email.)

No on the humidifier front: every one we bought in the last ten years broke after one or two seasons' use, and we finally gave up. It's something about us and humidifiers, I guess. (And these were the wazoo, expensive, "you'll never need to buy another one" kind -- feh. Not that I can afford them anymore, anyway.) And it's a very dry old house with baseboard heating, so I can't even put a pot on a radiator (oh, how I miss radiators in my old apartments back when I was single!).

However, I do have the shower and the bath. So, at least once a day I get the hot, humid air for a few minutes at least. I think tomorrow I'm going to just sit in the bath until I prune up, keeping the hot water fresh and the humidity in the air. But I have things to do during the day, so it'll have to wait until evening. Alas.

And yes! Scratch 'n Sniff THANTH! You should TM it! :)

(ETA: Oh, yes, the cough syrup. Codeine. FTW. I'll sleep tonight. But I'm going mad with the nasal drip and congestion, and I'm not to take decongestants because of my BP and what I didn't notice him writing down -- it's pleurisy and some pericardial rub sounds again. Fuck. I hate lupus. Medrol FTW -- it'll take care of it pretty fast. And yes, I have a followup. He'll have me scanned if the sounds are still there. Good guy -- he's an internist who's known me for years now; proofed part of my book for me when I was writing with the rheumatologist. He's an ex-lawyer [IP law] who was sick of working without ever coming in contact with people on a daily basis and so went back and got an MD and then his internal med. I jokingly call him an underachiever to his face. :) )

I'm unworried. I've felt far worse and I've been far worse. This is nothing. Just annoying and snorfelly.

*waits patiently*

It's darned dry where I live, so we ended up installing a whole-house humidifier. I love that I don't have to worry about it, except cutting it off from the furnace when the AC goes on in the summer. Otherwise, I think pots on radiators are awesome (had radiators in grad school).

And oh noes - pleurisy and possibly some pericarditis? That's not good - I'll bet you're very noisy to auscultation. I'm glad your internist is on top of things. I had some interesting classmates of that sort when I was in school - it really skewed the age range of the class (21 - 40), but those who were coming in from another career were usually much more motivated and made better study-buddies.

Feel better! *hugs carefully*
